DC16, a collection of finishing trade unions, wanted a new website for their safety and skills training program, STAR. The site needed to not only enable sign up for classes and receipt of awards, but it also needed to motivate union members to want to take the courses in the first place.

Safety courses are mandated, but the DC16 knows that the union and its reputation for “high performance, high value” would benefit if all their members consistently learned new techniques and were reminded of best practices within their discipline. Short of mandating them, DC16 needed a way to convince their members to take these courses in their free time. They had incentivized courses with prizes, but this was only so effective.
The four disciplines shared safety course work, but each has separate skill training and considerations.

DC 16 STAR now has a user-centered platform that welcomes members and talks to them about the real-world personal benefits of taking these classes, thus highlighting the intrinsic value of each course itself. Every class description clearly outlines the time commitment, the skills gained and what to expect. There is also a team ownership and pride aspect to the content.
The responsive design clearly guides users and reduces the clicks to conversion, making multiple class sessions and locations available in one view and filterable.
